"It's nice seeing these old clocks getting a second life"

I  retired years ago and recently I started restoring antique Mantle clocks as a hobby.  I soon discovered that the 100 year old brass Movements need to be completely rebuilt. These  brass Movements are very fragile and can be easily damaged. They  are precision  devices and after decades of use the grease has solidified and most are completely worn out (springs,bushings,gears etc.).  

It is sad that these clocks are now useless and they meant so much to the familes that looked at them daily for generations.  Many are family heirlooms. I enjoy seeing them brought back to life with the Quartz Movements and Chimes, ironically that is what destroyed the wind-up clock industry.

All our clocks are around 100 years old. They are stripped and refinished and we use as many original parts as possible. Each clock now has its own character and will be around for generations to enjoy again.

When these clocks were in service most homes had no electricity.  They used coal / wood to heat their homes and oil and kerosene lamps to see.  They were a main center piece in every home. They were basically the only way to tell time. When I purchase them they have over 100 years of this buildup. I remove this layer and expose the natural wood, giving each one it's own character.  I really enjoy seeing them come to life again and all the different styles. Personally I hate to get rid of them. I  have done a few for friends and I enjoy seeing them smile when I am done with them.
